Notes: The session was red-flagged for 28 minutes while a loose drain cover was
fixed. The break came 20 minutes after the session started and although the
session resumed later, most drivers failed to improve on their times set earlier.
Any chance of improved times in the final few minutes were dashed when Anthony
Davidson went off into the barriers at Turn 3 - yellow flags remained in place
until the session ended. David Coulthard had a restricted session after an
engine change.

Subject: Fastest Lap of the weekend (France)
Over the last few weeks I've been occasionally working on some stats
regarding fastest laps.

In the olden days you could look at the times in practice and/or
qualification sessions and the cars & drivers would be pretty much
ranked in order of who was quickest. The same was generally true in
the races - the fastest race laps would generally reflect which
ones were quickest. However, in the 21st century things are much
more complicated, so you have to look at the times in all sessions
to arrive at something more meaningful.

First I'll present a list of the fastest lap set by each driver at
the Hungaroring:

Driver Team Session Lap time

Lewis Hamilton McLaren-Mercedes - - Q2 - - 1'19.301
Fernando Alonso McLaren-Mercedes - - Q2 - - 1'19.661

Note that four drivers - including Kimi Räikkönen - set their best
laps during the race.

Secondly, here is a comparison similar to the ones that I post comparing the top

an eventful session for Hamilton he had a spin at Turn 7. Takuma Sato spun
off into the gravel at Turn 3 and was unable to rejoin the session.

Witam,

Wystarczy kazać mu zjechać do

mozna tlumaczyc wszystkiego.
Mam wrazenie jakby teraz bardziej kalkulowal zamiast po prostu sie
scigac. W ubieglym roku jezdzac gorszym bolidem potrafil naprawde
walczyc i robic swietne wrazenie. Teraz jego jazda jest niestety
bezbarwna, zadnym efektownych atakow czy wyprzedzen. Zamiast tego mamy
latwe puszczanie Hamiltona i Alonso. Duzo lepsze wrazenie sprawiaja
teraz Rosberg i Kovalainen, Robert niestety jakos sie zatracil :(

Oni

To
chyba inny wyścig oglądałem.

Popatrz na czasy okrążeń. W tej chwili od najgorszego do najlepszego
zespołu jest 3,5 sekundy. Pierwsza dziesiątka nie przekracza sekundy
różnicy. To nie są różnice pozwalające na wyprzedzanie. Czy powiesz, że
Massa (zwycięzca GP Turcji) jechał bezbarwnie podczas zawodów w Wielkiej
Brytanii?

Williams (o ile pamiętam to 9 WC) i Reanult (2 razy WC) to świetne
zespoły i potrafią doskonale wypracować strategię wyścigu. Pomimo

These comparisons only use the top speeds recorded through the regular speed
trap during the Saturday Qualifying sessions. This means that, at most events,
there are comparisons that are fairly meaningless because of some problem that
affected one or more drivers during one particular session.

The first table compares the 2006 team/driver combination with the equivalent
2007 team/driver - the same driver if possible, otherwise the 2006 driver is
compared to his 2007 replacement. This analysis is intended as a team comparison,
but the first table is also of some interest - but should be read with caution.

The second table ranks the eleven teams in order of the largest increase in
top speed, with Super Aguri making the biggest advance at Istanbul Park, and
Ferrari the smallest. (At some events some teams have failed to better their
top speed from 2006.

Here are the rankings at each 2007 event to date together with the
average ranking for the season so far.

There have been some events where two teams were equal (to two decimals of
percentage difference) and have been ranked equally (BMW and Renault at
Silverstone is an example).

1. The reason for the reduction in distance covered is because Friday
is no longer counted as part of the two events for each engine. Teams
now use different engines on Friday and swap to the "race" engines
for Saturday and Sunday.

Note: 2005 was decided on "single lap" qualifying. Since 2006 the grid has been
decided on a three-period knockout system. The "pole time" is no longer
necessarily the fastest time set during qualifying.

There have been 56 Grands Prix at Monza,
15 have been won from pole position (last was Montoya in 2005),
10 have been won from second (Schumacher in 2006),
11 have been won from third (Schumacher in 1996),
seven have been won from fourth (Barrichello in 2002),
only one from fifth (Prost in 1985),
and five from sixth (Coulthard in 1997).
Just six have been won from a lower grid position - Surtees (1967/9th), Hulme
(1968/7th), Gethin (1971/11th), Peterson (1974/7th & 1976/8th), and Herbert
(1996/8th).

Average grid position of winners = 3.268.

Subject: [Very Delayed] Overtaking Statistics #12 - Istanbul Park
Apologies for being so late.

Note that I won't be able to post any statistics for Belgium until later.

Introduction for New Readers
============================

2007 is the tenth season that I have posted these amateur overtaking
analyses. My intention was to allow easier comparisons between Grands
Prix, seasons, circuits, drivers, etc.

In order to make any meaningful and/or useful observations it is essential
to produce the stats in as consistent a way as possible. To do this I have
devised several "rules" that I try to follow for each event. Please note
before posting to complain that I missed an obvious passing manoeuvre that
it has probably been excluded because of one of my "rules". The rules are
outlined in the "Disclaimer" below - please read it.

This analysis was mainly derived from the official FIA lap chart, which is
usually available from www.fia.com, http://forix.autosport.com or
www.autosport.com/f1/ on race day or the following day. The original charts
remain copyright of the FIA.

Other excellent Formula One websites are available. This analysis is
completely and totally unofficial.

Disclaimer
==========

For the purposes of this analysis, I only count what I will term "genuine"
passing manoeuvres, which means that I always exclude:

a) any place changes made during pit stops
b) all lapping or unlapping manoeuvres
c) any place changes made during the first lap

Hopefully, a) & b) are obvious. c) is because although lap one is often the
best opportunity to make up places, it is also not typical of the rest of
the race, and so, for the purpose of comparing races with other races and
seasons with other seasons, it is simpler to exclude lap one completely. I
do summarise the changes on lap one later in the post.

For the purposes of this analysis a "pit stop" encompasses the slowing down
lap and the out lap, since any passes during those laps MIGHT be due to the
driver slowing down or speeding up.

Passes are not counted in these stats UNLESS the gained position is held
until the start/finish line is next crossed and so gets recorded onto the
lap chart. I try to ignore anything that isn't recorded in the lap chart,
even if it was seen on TV.

These are the passes I read for the 2007 Turkish GP:

Lap Place Passer (Passed)
==================================================
2 19 Button (Yamamoto)
2 18 Button (Sutil)
2 20 Trulli (Yamamoto)
3 12 Fisichella (Liuzzi)
3 17 Button (Vettel)
3 19 Trulli (Sutil)
3 18 Trulli (Vettel)
6 17 Trulli (Button)
11 16 Button (Trulli)
16 15 Button (Barrichello) [team-mates]
18 14 Button (Schumacher)
21 12 Button (Coulthard)
29 14 Button (Davidson)
20 13 Button (Liuzzi)
49 16 Trulli (Barrichello)

That's 15 passes in total, compared to 25 last season.

Most: 9 Button (5 Trulli)

Note: The number in brackets (ASP) is the average starting position in 2007
(grid position after any penalties have been applied). Obviously, a driver
who frequently starts from pole position has very little chance to gain
places while one who usually starts at the back of the grid has a good
chance of gaining places.

the above. I do, of course, take full responsibility for any errors. I would
be grateful to anyone for pointing them out, and will incorporate any
corrections in later posts.
